Course Aim
Students will gain comprehensive knowledge regarding management of a medical practice, while identifying methods of maintaining a positive working environment and a healthy business, as part of the Medical Office Management (MOM) role.
Of Interest To
Those actively pursuing MOM training as part of their life-long career journey, and to provide the opportunity for students to develop the skills required to perform management duties within the medical industry.
Method of Delivery
Students are enrolled at the campus with a scheduled start date and are supported by a stand-up instructor.

Course Introduction

Clinic Management and Profitability enhances skills gained from Management Fundamentals and Business Supervisory Skills, but specifically with regard to management of a healthcare setting. A Medical Office Manager’s role is fundamentally different from other managers because it focuses on patient service, as opposed to customer service. Topics which are specific to a healthcare setting include personnel and patient management techniques, concepts of teamwork, hiring and retaining healthcare employees, and management styles. Students also are trained to understand that the doctor is responsible for the health of the patients, but the Clinic Manager is responsible for the health of the business. Students learn effective e-mail communication to patients and other physicians and techniques to increase clinic revenue, decrease expenses, and strengthen overall clinic profitability. This course consists of 9 days (39 hours) of daily online learning sessions in the Healthcare Hybrid format.

Course Prerequisites

Microsoft Word Level 3, Microsoft Outlook Level 2, Business Correspondence Level 1, Basic Bookkeeping Level 1, Management Fundamentals, Business Supervisory Skills, Human Resources, Medical Office Procedures, and Clinical Procedures.

Course Notes

Students are supplied with a textbook for ongoing reference. In addition to quizzes, there is a final exam upon completion of the course. Students must achieve a mark of 75% to successfully complete the course.

Part 1: Analyzing employee personalities, the role of the staff supervisor, and the employee handbook

Part 2: Understanding employee performance evaluations, and identifying sexual harassment in the workplace

The Front Office: Identifying staff interpersonal skills and effective communication tools

Written Communication: Understanding proper email etiquette and the goals of effective written communication

Responsibilities of the Manager

Part 1: Describing the types of managers and effective leadership skills, and understanding the physician-administrator relationship

Part 2: Recognizing signs of stress and potential substance abuse in a physician, and understanding the policy and procedure manual

Part 3: Determining appropriate financial decisions regarding purchasing equipment and supplies, controlling costs, and organizing an office relocation

The Financial Side: Exploring various financial aspects of the medical office environment and generating extra income
